But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." (Mark 5:36 NAS95)
Fear gripped him and the minute he knew of Jesus' presence, he fell before Him. Jarius had nowhere else to go. His daughter lay dying and his emotions had a raw feel and a depth of anguish only known to those who've lost a child. His prostrate posture before Jesus communicated the pain and grief that gripped him. In the midst of the pain, the glimmer of hope he held found its source in Jesus. "[L]ay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live." Jarius had heard of Jesus, but now He hoped. Jesus heard Jarius too. He went with him, but on the way, the news came - your daughter has died.
Jesus overheard the news. What Jesus did next reflects the awareness of His hearing and the love that He carries. Jarius' heart had just broken, but Jesus' words breathed life into His soul, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." This time Jarius had said nothing, but Jesus heard his pain, understood his fear, and sent courage into his heart so they continued the journey to his home. There, in his daughter's room, with her parents and some disciples, Jesus took her hand. He spoke a few gentle words and turned death into life as Jarius' daughter stood to walk. Gloom turned to joy and astonishment filled the home. Jarius had the courage to request the impossible, despite the fear. Jesus revealed the power of His love in response. We commune with a phenomenal God.
May God bless you and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you.
