Albania: Mountain and Sea and Rocky History

Posted by GEM Communications Team on 06-Jun-2016 in Albania

June 7th marks the start of the Muslim recognition of Ramadan in 2016. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a time for fasting, prayer, and reflection. Please join us over these next five weeks as we pray for five Muslim countries in Europe and the salvation of Muslims all over the world.

On the Mediterranean coastline, neighbored by Greece, Macedonia, and Italy, the mountainous and coastal regions of Albania sit in breathtaking view. This country is known for its magical national parks and hosts a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized by its cobblestone streets and old Ottoman houses.

Albania has a rich religious history: Christianity was first introduced throughout the country in 325 AD. However, from the 15th to the 19th century, during the rule of the Ottoman empire, Christianity was replaced by Islam. Following that, the Communist regime that ruled from 1944 until the early 1990’s left Albania economically, morally, and spiritually demoralized. It remains to this day one of Europe’s poorest countries.

Like many countries in Europe, Christianity is not reaching younger generations because it is seen as a dead tradition. Albania has a small population of only 3 million and is predominantly a Muslim nation. Presumably as few as 8000 are Christians and there are many small villages and towns who don’t know anything about Jesus.

During this first week if Ramadan, please pray with us for these many Muslims in Albania who need to hear of the freedom Christ offers.

Prayer Points:

  • Pray for Christians to minister to Muslims in Albania and for their hearts to be open to the Holy Spirit.
  • Pray for more people to go to Albania and teach Christians how to effectively share the Gospel.
  • Pray for hope and renewal within the country and amongst its people after their dark past.
