Immigration

You might have a mental image of the stereotypical European: someone who resembles the stereotypical North American. Yet immigrants have changed the face of Europe—they currently make up 7.7 percent of the population.

  • More than 220,000 people applied for asylum in European Union countries in 2007, increasing discussions about human rights. (Read more.)
  • More than 13,000 illegal immigrants have died as they’ve attempted to enter Europe since 1988. (Read more.)
  • Many native Europeans see the change in their culture as a threat to cultural homogeneity; some call it an immigration crisis.

Some "new Europeans" have fled from nations where Christianity is restricted; others are leaders living in Europe temporarily. All could experience Jesus through His disciples—and then make disciples in their home countries. Missionaries in Europe have the opportunity to transform lives and touch the world with Christ’s message.
