I Have Prayed
Macedonia
Macedonia Capital: Skopje
Border Countries: Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania
Macedonia, once part of Yugoslavia, is a land of contrasts. In the capital city of Skopje, one will see both horse-drawn carts and space-age shopping centers. This historic land is home to ancient ruins and almost equally ancient ethnic tensions that live on today between Orthodox Macedonians and Muslim Albanians. Since the country declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it has struggled economically. With an unemployment rate of 40 percent, low salaries, and high prices, life in Macedonia can at times be difficult. Only two percent of the population follows Christ, and most of the country struggles on in hopelessness and spiritual blindness.

Recently, God drew church leaders in Skopje together to plan a Pentecost service for area churches. For 40 days before the event, people came together to pray 24 hours a day, and 600 people attended the service. This new sense of unity is significant. Pastors from the various denominations continue to pray together today, representing lasting fruit from the event. High school and college-age students passionately live out their faith and influence their peers through outreach events like Christian concerts and retreats. Macedonians of all ages are finding a relationship with Christ through personal evangelism and the Alpha course.
Macedonians value relationships. Building friendships is a great way to share about Christ, and teaching English and computer skills are effective ways to build friendships. Many Macedonians need such training to find jobs. North American churches can help reach Macedonians by partnering directly with Macedonian churches. Such partnerships can include prayer and/or sending and receiving short-term teams to evangelize and disciple. Macedonian church leaders have also requested longer-term help from North American believers to partner with them in their ministries and plant churches.
  1. Pray that God would remove the veil that obscures the Gospel, and that the people's blindness would be lifted so all might see and believe in Him.
  2. Pray that God will richly pour out spiritual fruit from the efforts of those ministering to Macedonians.
