Spaniards are slowly but steadily turning to Christ. The number of Protestant church members has increased sixteen-fold over the past 70 years. In the countryside, people face far more social pressure to conform to Roman Catholicism, and few evangelical churches exist. Thus, the people are highly suspicious of foreignersincluding Spaniards who are from other towns. Evangelical churches are concentrated mainly in Madrid, Barcelona, and the province of Andalusia, the population centers of the country. City dwellers in particular are able to respond to the Gospel with a great degree of freedom since people feel a sense of anonymity.
The Spanish church is in need of renewal and encouragement. Leadership development and interdenominational cooperation could help bring revival. North Americans can partner with Spanish believers to meet these needs through social outreach, camping ministries, theological instruction, and music ministries. In fact, these are just some of the ways to reach Spaniards and enable them to share Christ's love with their neighbors. North Americans can also reach the people of Spain by ministering to the large population of Muslim immigrants from North Africa. Outreach among immigrants is a great and largely unmet need in Spain.
