Prayer

In an effort to encourage tourism and other forms of economic development, many countries in this region are displaying a new openness to the West. Pray that believers would catch a vision for involvement and investment in this region. Pray for the development of genuine partnerships and significant relationships with local business leaders. Pray that Kingdom principles would have a greater influence than the power of money and self-interest.
The Mediterranean Region has the world's largest youth population (ages 15-24) and the highest rates of unemployment amongst them. Unemployment continues to sow disillusionment, which is the seed of extremism, into the hearts of youth. Pray for an improvement in the economic situation of these young people. Pray for their protection from recruiters who would seek to capitalize on their discontentment to further political and religious agendas.
Pray for the government leaders of this region who are seeking reforms in the areas of economic development, women's rights, and freedom of expression. Often their efforts are opposed by the now rising political influence of conservative Islamic parties. Pray that their reforms would be successful and that moderate forces would prevail over extremist tendencies.
Praise God for the small but growing national church movements. While governments are displaying more and more tolerance for Muslim-background believers, they still face significant intimidation and harassment from the police, employers, families, and Muslim extremists. Pray for their ability to stand firm and grow in their faith. Pray for boldness and wisdom in their witness.
True freedom of religion is lacking. Often other religious groups are tolerated as long as their ministry is confined to foreigners. Generally speaking, it is illegal for Muslims to change their faith. Pray that governments would add freedom of religion to their reform agendas. Pray that national believers would be extended the freedom to worship that foreigners enjoy.
A long history of prejudice, "Christian" conquest and colonialism has hardened the hearts of many in the region toward all things Christian. Pray for meaningful relationships to develop between Muslims and Christians that tear down barriers of misunderstanding and build new bridges of love.
