In many ways Bulgaria is a success story of the Balkans. It has a stable democracy and has been a member of NATO since 2004 and of the European Union since 2007. Yet Bulgaria is still a country in transition, struggling to reconcile its past and assert itself in a world brought ever closer together by globalization.

"[Bulgaria] is a dark, fascinating and, unfortunately, forgotten country," says Tim Jones, Chicago Tribune correspondent. "Come if you're interested in watching the noisy, tectonic shifts of a former communist satellite in awkward transition to wherever it's going." (Read more here.)

Bulgaria is truly a nation in flux. With rapid globalization has come massive change politically, socially, and spiritually. Even so, more Bulgarians are open to consider personal faith in Christ. The Holy Spirit continues to work in the hearts of believers, breaking down the problems of the past and providing a lighted path into the future.

The evangelical church is small but hearty. Nationally, it faces challenges from secular humanism, and the aftermath of communism. Internationally, it looks outward with a dream to send missionaries to reach the lost throughout the Balkans, Turkey, and the Middle East. Is God calling you to serve in Bulgaria?
